    1 1967 - Steve Winwood appears on Raw Blues featuring "Long Night" performed by John Mayall and "Steve Anglo"

    1 1969 - Island Records releases the compilation Heavies featuring the Spencer Davis Group's "Back Into My Life Again"

    1 1969 - Traffic disbands. Steve Winwood joins Blind Faith, and Capaldi, Wood, and Mason form Wynder K. Frogg. Both groups would last less than a year.

"While You See a Chance"/ "Vacant Chair" is released as a single in the US, peaks at #7, and spends 17 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100. "Arc of A Diver / Dust" is released as a single in the US, peaks at #48 on Billboards Hot 100 charts, spending 18 weeks there. "While You See a Chance" receives the Millionth Play award in 1988.

    5 1979 - The Blues Brothers album Briefcase of Blues, which includes their cover of "Gimme Some Lovin", hits #1 and goes platinum.

    8 1987 - SW, receiving his first Grammy nod, draws 5 nominations for Back in the High Life, more than any other performer in this year.

    10 1976 - Howlin' Wolf dies; SW had worked on his albums and counted him as one of his influences.

    12 1988 - Chronicles is awarded a Gold Record

    13 1973 - SW performs at the Rainbow Concert in London for Eric Clapton.

    15 1970 - Ginger Baker's Air Force plays a concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London with Steve Winwood

    18 1987 - SW marries Eugenia Crafton at the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City

    20 1966 - "Keep On Running" hits #1 in the UK and stays there for 3 weeks

    21 1998 - Steve appears at the Fourth Annual Nashville Music Awards. It is his first time at this event, and he opens the show (the position of honor) with "Gimme Some Lovin'".

    8 1969 - SW, Eric Clapton, and Ginger Baker assemble at the Berkshire cottage for first rehearsals. The new group is as yet unnamed, but it is announced as Cream, with SW in Jack Bruce's place.

    9 1979 - Steve Winwood appears on George Harrison's record George Harrison

    11 1967 - "I'm a Man" peaks at #9 in the UK.

    12 1986 - Steve Winwood appears on Talk Talk's The Colour Of Spring.

    13 1944 - Rebop Kwaku Baah is born in Ghana.

    15 1981 - Island Records causes a home-taping furor by introducing "1+1" tapes - pre-recorded on the A side as usual, with the B side left blank to be used for home-recording. The series is set to start with SW's Arc of a Diver.

    19 1949 - Eddie Hardin, who replaces SW in the Spencer Davis Group, is born.

    20 1971 - Ginger Baker's Airforce disbands. It had included SW, Chris Wood, his wife Jeanette Jacobs, and Ric Grech.

    22 1989 - At the 31st Annual Grammy Awards, SW (having been nominated for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance) wins an award for Best Engineered Recording, all for Roll With It.

    22 1994 - Steve Winwood appears on A Tribute to Curtis Mayfield, contributing the song "It's All Right!".

    24 1987 - Steve Winwood is nominated for six Grammys and wins 3 at the 29th annual awards - Record of the Year for Back in the High Life. Best Rock Vocal for "Higher Love", and Best Engineered Recording for the album Back In The High Life

    25 1967 - "Gimme Some Lovin'" peaks at #7 in the US.

    28 1964 - Spencer Davis Group plays 'The First Rhythm and Blues Festival in England' in Birmingham, along with The Yardbirds and Sonny Boy Williamson

    1 1966 - "Somebody Help Me" is released as a UK single in March 1966. The song, also written by Jackie Edwards, becomes the band's second #1 hit in the UK

    1 1972 - Steve Winwood appears on the Bonzo Dog Band album Let's Make Up And Be Friendly

    2 1984 - Steve Winwood apears on David Gilmour's About Face.

    4 1967 - The New Musical Express reports: The Spencer Davis Group has announced that Stevie Winwood and his brother Muff will leave the band after an April 2 1967 show. (The 18 year old had been with the group for four years.) Muff Winwood also leaves to head up A&R at Island Agency. Pete York and Spencer Davis stay with the band and launch the new incarnation of SDG.

    4 1969 - Steve Winwood appears on Spooky Tooth: Spooky Two

    5 1971 - Steve Winwood appears on Jimi Hendrix's release Cry Of Love

    5 1995 - Viv Stanshall, SW's composing collaborator, dies in a house fire. SW will sing at his funeral.

    7 1973 - Shoot Out at the Fantasy Factory awarded a Gold Record.

    12 1966 - "Keep On Running" peaks at #76 in the US.

    1983- Steve Winwood contributes a song to the soundtrack for They Call It An Accident

    1988 - Talking Back to the Night peaks at #57 in the US.

    17 1990 - Ric Grech of Blind Faith and Traffic dies.

    20 1969 - Mason, Capaldi, Wood & Frog split up after only 60 days together.

    23 1953 - Chaka Khan, who duets with Steve on "Higher Love", is born.

    24 1987 - Steve Winwood appears on Dave Mason's album Two Hearts

    28 1991 - Funeral services are held in England for Eric Clapton's son Conor, who fell to his death from a New York City high rise apartment window. Steve, Phil Collins and George Harrison are among the many who attend.

    30 1945 - Eric Clapton is born in Ripley.

    1 1976 - Go releases their debut album, Go

    1 1981 - Steve Winwood appears on Jim Capaldi's solo album Let The Thunder Cry

    2 1967 - SW officially leaves the Spencer Davis Group.

    6 1968 - Steve Miller, on tour in England, writes an article for Billboard decrying the British rock scene as "more an industry than a scene...It's at a low, lifeless point...The only good bands I've seen are Traffic, Marmalade and Procul Harum. I've seen bands doing queer bits in their underwear to get attention."

    6 1979 - Steve Winwood appears on Mike Oldfield's "Guilty / Guilty (Long Version)"

    8 1994 - Bernard Edwards, of Chic, dies in Tokyo following a gig with SW. SW will later cover and dedicate "Family Affair" on the album Junction Seven to him.

    14 1966 - "Somebody Help Me" hits #1 in the UK.

    18 1981 - "While You See a Chance" peaks at #7 in the US.

    18 1987 - "The Finer Things" peaks at #8 in the US.

    21 1978 - Sandy Denny, on whose albums SW had played, dies.

    22 1987 - Steve Winwood appears on Jo-El Sonnier's Come On Joe

    23 1969 - Joe Cocker's With A Little Help From My Friends is released. Steve Winwood plays organ on the title track.

    30 1983 - SW's manager Andy Cavaliere dies of a heart attack, age 36. Muddy Waters, on whose albums SW had played, also dies.

    1 1965 - The Spencer Davis Group releases Their First LP

    1 1969 - Traffic releases the album Last Exit

    1 1977 - Steve Winwood appears on Sandy Denny's album Rendevous

    2 1968 - Steve Winwood and Jimi Hendrix record "Voodoo Chile" after 7AM at the Record Plant, New York for the forthcoming Hendrix album Electric Ladyland

    3 1969 - Steve Winwood appears on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine.

    3 1969 - Ric Grech joins SW, Clapton and Baker in the still-unnamed group which is to become Blind Faith.

    3 1991 - The North American tour supporting Refugees of the Heart opens in Mountain View, California.

    8 1974 - Graham Bond is killed when he falls in front of a train at London's Finsbury Park Station. SW will later write "Vacant Chair" about this.

    10 1946 - Dave Mason is born in Worcester.

    11 1968 - Dave Mason rejoins Traffic

    12 1948 - SW is born in Great Barr, a suburb of Birmingham.

    12 1971 - Mick Jagger marries Bianca in St Tropez, France. Guests at the wedding included SW, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, Stephen Stills and the rest of the Stones.

    12 1992 - Steve Winwood appears on Rodney Crowell's Life is Messy

    15 1973 - Steve Winwood appears on the Jim Capaldi solo record Fierce Heart

    19 1978 - Dire Straits first album Dire Straits, produced by Muff Winwood, is released.

    19 1988 - Chronicles is awarded a Platinum record.

    20 1944 - Joe Cocker, a friend from the Cottage and on whose albums SW guests, is born.

    27 1968 - After quitting the group in December 1967, Dave Mason rejoins Traffic for the first time, in New York to work on several songs which he contributes to the next album.

    29 1991 - SW is not hurt when his tour bus is sideswiped by an oncoming truck near Findley, Ohio.

    31 2000 - Tito Puente, a member of Latin Crossings, dies.



    June

    1 1964 - Chris Blackwell first sees the Spencer Davis Group in a club in Birmingham.

    1 1968 - Dave Mason officially rejoins Traffic for the first time.

    2 1962 - Island Records releases its first single -- a tune called "Twist Baby" by Owen Gray. The label will become home to acts like Traffic, Jethro Tull, and Bob Marley and the Wailers, among many others.

    3 1997 - Junction Seven is released.

    4 1997 - Ronnie Lane, at whose ARMS benefit SW has participated, dies of multiple sclerosis.

    7 1969 - Blind Faith plays its first and last live UK show in Hyde Park before an estimated 100,000 people. Dave Mason and Jim Capaldi attend the concert.

    7 1993 - Ground is broken for the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. Hmmm....

    8 1997 - SW conducts his first 'chat' on the Internet.

    10 1968 - Traffic plays the Zurich rock festival in Switzerland, with Jimi Hendrix and Eric Burdon and the Animals.

    10 1986 - Steve Winwood releases the album Back in the High Life in July 1986. "Higher Love" / "And I Go" is released as a US single. "Higher Love" peaks at #1 and spends 22 weeks on Billboard's Hot 100 Charts. The song also peaks at #17 on Billboard's Adult COntemporary charts and at #4 on Billboard's Album Rock charts. "Freedom Overspill" / "Help Me Angel" is also released as a US single.     12 1976 - The album Go - Live from Paris is recorded at the Palais des Sports in Paris. The lineup includes SW as well as Klaus Schulz, Michael Shrieve, Phil Manzanera, Al DiMeola, and of course Stomu Yamashta.

    14 1943 - Muff (Mervyn) Winwood, SW's only sibling, is born.

    14 1970 - Eric Clapton's band, Derek And The Dominoes, make their live debut in Britain. They are joined by Dave Mason, who plays the guitar parts performed by Duane Allman on the studio version of "Layla".

    16 1971 - Winwood, a double compilation album, peaks at US #93.

    16 1994 - The North American tour supporting Far From Home opens in Devore, California.

    17 1977 - SW releases his first solo album, Steve Winwood, in the UK on Island Records, recorded at his home-studio in Gloucestershire, saying it had taken him a long while to summon up the confidence. Jim Capaldi joins him on 4 of the 6 tracks. Steve plays his first ever solo gig at Rough Hill in the Cotswolds following the albums' release.

    20 1967 - SW is asked by his local Vicar in Birmingham to write music for two psalms.

    21 1988 - Roll With It is released. "Roll With It"/ "The Morning Side" is released as a US single, and peaks at #1, spending 18 weeks on Billboard's Hot 100 charts. "Roll With It" also reached #1 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary charts, and #1 on Billboard's Album Rock charts. "Don't You Know What The Night Can Do?     22 1969 - Blind Faith releases its one and only album, the seminal self-titled Blind Faith

    1 1967 - The Spencer Davis Group releases I'm A Man. The Album was recorded before Winwood left the band.

    1 1969 - Steve Winwood appears on Gordon Jackson's Thinking Back released on Marmalade records

    1 1970 - Traffic releases John Barleycorn Must Die, initially begun as a solo SW project entitled Mad Shadows.

    1 1973 - Kabaka/Amao/Winwood (or Third World) releases the album Aiye-Keta

    1 1980 - Steve Winwood appears on Jim Capaldi's solo record The Sweet Smell Of Success

    1 1994 - Traffic is re-formed upon the release of Far From Home by Steve Winwood and Jim Capaldi.

    3 1998 - The "Latin Crossing" tour begins, at the Montreal Jazz Festival.

    5 1968 - Promoter Bill Graham opens The Fillmore West in San Francisco. Traffic considers this their west coast home.

    7 1988 - SW begins a 2-month North American tour supporting Roll With It at The MUNY in St Louis, Missouri.

    9 1986 - Steve Winwood appears on Billy Joel's album The Bridge

    9 1988 - Roll With It enters the charts. It will stay on the chart for 31 weeks eventually hitting #1. The LP features the #1 hit, "Roll With It." It marks Steve's first record for Virgin Records, having departed Island Records in 1988.

    10 1968 - Eric Clapton announces that Cream will break up following a farewell tour. This opens the door for Blind Faith to form.

    10 1977 - SW releases his first solo album, Steve Winwood, in the US.

    11 1969 - Blind Faith debuts in the US at Madison Square Garden in New York.

    12 1983 - Chris Wood dies in Birmingham.

    20 1988 - Steve Winwood appears on Jimmy Buffett's Hot Water

    21 1991 - The North American tour supporting Refugees of the Heart finishes up in Los Angeles, California.

    25 1969 - Neil Young makes his first appearance with Crosby, Stills and Nash at New York's Fillmore East. SW had been their first choice but declined the invitation to join CS&N.

    27 1998 - The final date of the Latin Crossings tour, with a performance in Beirut, Lebanon.

    30 1988 - "Roll With It" peaks at #1 in the US and stays there for 4 weeks.



    August

    1 1974 - Steve Winwood appears on the Jim Capaldi solo release Whale Meat Again

    2 1944 - Jim Capaldi is born in Evesham, Worcester. (Widely reported as August 24, this is in fact the correct date.)

    6 1990 - SW begins mixing Refugees of the Heart at Emerald Studios in Nashville.

    9 1995 - Jerry Garcia dies. Traffic had opened for several of the last Grateful Dead gigs.

    10 1909 - Leo Fender, inventor of the electric guitar, is born.

    14 1994 - The reunited Traffic plays at Woodstock '94 in Saugerties, New York.

    15 1942 - Pete York is born.

    15 1987 - "Back In The High Life Again" peaks at #13 on the pop singles chart

    16 1997 - SW performs at Wembley Stadium for the Songs and Visions concert, in honor of Elvis Presley.

    17 1988 - Roll With It is awarded a Gold Record.

    19 1940 - Ginger Baker, of Blind Faith, is born.

    23 1969 - Blind Faith enters the charts and eventually hits #1.

    23 1973 - Traffic headlines the UK's Reading Festival.

    4 1988 - The North American tour supporting Roll With It ends in Toronto.

    8 1986 - Back in the High Life is awarded a Gold Record.

    15 1982 - Talking Back to the Night is released. It peaks at #28 on the Billboard charts, spending 25 weeks there. "Still In The Game" / "Dust" is released as a US single, spending a week on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, peaking at #8 on Billboard's Album Rock charts.

    19 1997- The US tour to support Junction 7 kicks off in Ft Lauderdale, Florida.

    20 1983 - SW appears at the ARMS benefit concert for former Faces member Ronnie Lane at London's Royal Albert Hall, along with Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page. The All-Star cast also included Ray Cooper (drums/percussion), James Hooker (keyboards), Kenny Jones (drums), Andy Fairweather-Low (guitar, keyboards, and vocals), Fernando Saunders (bass and vocals), Chris Stainton (keyboards), Charlie Watts (drums), Bill Wyman (bass), Jeff Beck (guitar and vocals), Tony Hymas (keyboards), Ronnie Lane (vocals), Simon Phillips (drums).

    3 1973 - Rebop Kwaku Baah, Traffic's percussionist, is released from jail; he had been there a month after attacking 2 policemen in London. He was also fined 20 pounds for biting a cab driver's ear.

    8 1967 - Steve Winwood appears on Family: Scene Through The Eye Of A Lens/Gypsy Woman, contributing mellotron to the tracks.

    8 1969 - It is announced that Eric Clapton will join Delaney and Bonnie on their tour, having met them when they supported Blind Faith on tour.

    6 1990 - Refugees of the Heart is released. "I Will Be Here" / "In The Light of Day (instrumental)" released as US single in early 1991. It peaks at #40 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary charts.

    7 1978 - Steve Winwood appears on Vivian Stanshall's album Sir Henry at Rawlinson's End

    9 1968 - Joe Cocker's "With a Little Help from My Friends", with SW, hits #1 in the UK.

    10 1969 - Ginger Baker is offered a starring role in the Hollywood western Zachariah, and is said to be keen to accept, but it apparently falls through.

    11 1965 - The Spencer Davis Group releases the singles "Keep On Running" and "High Time Baby"

    12 1985 - EMI announces a compilation album Conspiracy of Peace, with all proceeds going to Amnesty International. Artists include SW, Peter Gabriel, Paul McCartney, Dire Straits, and Elton John. It was never released.

    17 1989 - Steve Winwood appears on Phil Collins' But Seriously

    20 1947 - Joe Walsh, who guests on Back in the High Life, is born.

    20 1970 - "Gimme Some Lovin'" by Traffic (not SDG) peaks at #68 on the pop singles chart.

    20 1982 - "Valerie" (Talking Back to the Night version) peaks at #70 on the pop singles chart.

    21 1970 - Jimi Hendrix' "Voodoo Chile", with SW, hits #1 in the UK.

    22 1986 - "Freedom Overspill" peaks at #20 on the pop singles chart.

    23 1970 - Ginger Baker's Airforce performs at Town Hall, Birmingham UK with Steve Winwood

    25 1997 - SW finishes up the Junction 7 tour of the US in Los Angeles.

    26 1966 - "Gimme Some Lovin'" peaks at #2 in the UK.

    26 1968 - Cream gives its last concert at the Royal Albert Hall, London. The crowd chants "God save the Cream." Clapton and drummer Ginger Baker continue to work together in Blind Faith.

    27 1970 - George Harrison releases his solo album All Things Must Pass, produced by Phil Spector and featuring noted players including Eric Clapton, Dave Mason, Ringo Starr and Jim Gordon.

    29 1975 - Jim Capaldi's "Love Hurts" peaks at #4 in the UK.

    30 1973 - Steve Winwood appears on Robert Palmer's album Sneakin' Sally Through The Alley

    30 1974 Steve Winwood appears on Vivian Stanshall's first solo album Men Opening Umbrellas Ahead

    30 1974 - Steve Winwood appears on Vivian Stanshall's 7" single "Lakonga/Baba Tunde" from the Men Opening Umbrellas Ahead sessions (not released on the album).

    1 1975 - Steve Winwood appears on Jim Capaldi's solo album Short Cut Draw Blood

    1 1975 - Steve Winwood appears on the album Waves by Jade Warrior

    1 1976 - Steve Winwood appears on the Fania All Stars album Delicate and Jumpy

    2 1966 - SW is named Best New Singer and SDG is named Best New Group by New Musical Express.

    7 1988 - Roy Orbison (Lefty Wilbury) dies of a heart attack. It is rumored that the remaining Traveling Wilburys, Lucky (Bob Dylan), Otis (Jeff Lynne), Charlie T Jr (Tom Petty), and Nelson (George Harrison), later invite SW to join the group. He declines and Roy's spot remains unfilled.

    8 1967 - Traffic's Mr Fantasy, their first album, is released.

    8 1995 - Jr Walker dies of cancer. SW had met his future wife Eugenia at one of his concerts.

    9 1972 - The Who's Tommy opens at London's Rainbow Theatre; its cast includes SW as Hawker. Among the other stars are The Who, Rod Stewart, Maggie Bell, Sandy Denny, Richie Havens, Ringo Starr, and Richard Harris, backed by the London Symphony Orchestra. The presentation is recorded and released, charting as high as #5 early next year.

    10 1974 - Traffic officially dissolves following the tour in support of When the Eagle Flies. It won't reunite again for 20 years.

    12 1968 - The Rolling Stones film their Rock 'n' Roll Circus; Traffic had been scheduled to appear, but have recently broken up. The film is never seen until the video is released in November 1996

    16 1967 - "Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush" peaks at #8 in the UK.

    19 1987 - "Valerie" (Chronicles version) peaks at #9 in the US.

    21 1969 - Ginger Baker launches the Airforce.

    21 1970 - John Barleycorn Must Die is awarded a Gold Record.

    29 1967 - Dave Mason leaves Traffic for the first time.

    30 1989 - Steve Winwood appears on Leyers, Michiels, & Soulsister: Heat.
